Defending race winner Felipe Massa put his Ferrari at the top of both practice sessions Friday for this weekend's Grand Prix of Bahrain.
On a late run in the second practice session, with low fuel on board, Felipe Massa laid down the quickest lap of the day at 1:31.420.
Massa was followed closely in the speed charts by his teammate Kimi Raikkonen.
Points leader Lewis Hamilton ran fourth in bost sessions, but crashed his McLaren into the wall in the closing laps of the second session. While the young driver walked away unhurt, his MP4-23 suffered considerable damage with the contact.
"It was a shame that I ended what had been a productive day going off the circuit and hitting the barriers at Turn Seven," Hamilton said. "I was just pushing and sometimes these things happen. I am absolutely fine, and hopefully the damage to the car is not too bad. We would have had to change our engine and gearbox anyway so hopefully I am not going to be too unpopular with the boys in the garage."
Hamilton has a three-point lead over Raikkonen and BMW's Nick Heidfeld. Massa has yet to score a point this season.
One more practice session is scheduled prior to Saturday's qualifying at 7 a.m. (ET).
Sunday's Grand Prix of Bahrain is set for 7 a.m. (ET) and will be televised live on SPEED.
