Haas Penalties Upheld

The National Stock Car Racing Commission has decided to uphold the penalties against the Haas CNC Racing No. 66 and No. 70 cars handed out after inspection for the Coca-Cola 600 at Lowe's Motor Speedway.

The team had appealed the degree of the penalties, but not the reason for the penalties.

Four penalties were given to both of the cars including: the loss of 150 car owner points and the confiscation of the cars; the loss of 150 driver points for both Scott Riggs and Johnny Sauter; $100,000 fine and suspension from 6 events and probation until the end of the year for each crew chief; and two crew member suspensions and probations as well.

Both cars were found to have unapproved rear wing mounts during pre-race inspection and were confiscated at the track prior to the race.

"We've got an issue with the rear-wing mounts of the No. 66 and 70 cars," NASCAR spokesman Kerry Tharp said at the time. "We took a look at them here a little while ago and they had altered the location of the upper wing mounting points."

Both cars were taken to the NASCAR R&D Facility in Concord, North Carolina where they were inspected before the penalties were handed out.

During the appeal, the commission deemed that the infractions resulted from what appeared to be a deliberate attempt to circumvent the inspection process.

The teams had argued that the infractions didn't involve illegal parts on the cars and that the resulting higher wing location was a disadvantage. They didn't contest the rules violation at the appeal but argued that the penalties were too severe for the infractions.
