Kyle Busch dominated Saturday’s NASCAR Nationwide Series O'Reilly Challenge at Texas Motor Speedway, leading 179 of the 200 laps en route to his second consecutive victory of the weekend.
However, Busch could face a penalty later this week for a weight violation.
The infraction would stem from an improperly secured wight in opening-day inspection and will most likely be announced on Tuesday. Points and a monetary fine are expected.
Busch now has a chance to make NASCAR history Sunday in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Dickies 500 by becoming the first driver to sweep three national division races in one weekend.
Saturday Busch was in command most of the day. He outran Casey Mears to the finish line to score his eighth Nationwide Series victory of the season and his fourth straight at Texas.
Busch was sporting a WWE-themed paint scheme on his Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota on Saturday and celebrated his win in victory lane with a championship belt he was given before the day began.
"We outwrestled them today," Busch laughed. "We had a great car and my thanks to these guys for putting me in position to have a chance at winning today. Would love to get another one tomorrow to sweep the weekend here at Texas."
Busch has not won a Sprint Cup race at Texas during his career and finished 18th when the series visited the track back in April.
Mears, who hadn't competed in a Nationwide Series event since 2007, was a late substitute for Jeff Burton in the Richard Childress Racing Chevrolet.
“Fortunately I was the guy that could fit in the seat,” Mears said. “I had a lot of fun and it was definitely a surprise.”
Jason Leffler, Matt Kenseth and Brad Keselowski rounded out the top five.
Kevin Harvick, Brian Vickers, David Ragan, Carl Edwards and Mike Bliss completed the top-10 finishers.
Busch can possibly clinch the title next weekend in the second-to-last race of the season.
"Well, you know, it ain’t over until it’s over,” Edwards said, “but they look pretty good.”
The NASCAR Nationwide Series now heads to Phoenix International Raceway next Saturday afternoon.
