Reed Sorenson joined Chip Ganassi Racing with Felix Sabates in 2003 as part of the team's driver development program.
In 2004, he ran three ARCA races and four Nationwide Series races for CGRFS, amassing one ARCA win at Michigan and four top-five and five top-10 finishes between the two series.
The next season, Sorenson reached Victory Lane twice in the Nationwide Series with his first win coming after a dominating performance at Nashville Superspeedway.
Before running two Sprint Cup events late in 2005, Sorenson was given the news that he would be behind the wheel of the NSCS Target Dodge full-time in 2006.
In his first full season in the Sprint Cup series, Sorenson recorded a best finish of fifth at Michigan and a total of five top-10 finishes, resulting in a 24th-place finish in the championship standings. Simultaneously, he ran in all but one of the Nationwide Series events in 2006, amassing five top fives and 14 top 10s en route to a 10th-place finish in the standings.
Sorenson's third year driving in the Cup Series consisted of one pole award for the Allstate 400 at the Brickyard at Indianapolis Motor Speedway, three top-fives and six top-10s. He finished 2007 in the 22nd position.
Sorenson struggled in the 2008 season and only scored one top five and two top 10s. He finished 32nd in the final points and towards the end of the season announced he'd be leaving Ganassi for Gillett Evernham Motorsports (now Richard Petty Motorsports).
