Terry McCarl is one of the most personable racers in the pits, but he’s also one of the fastest. The World of Outlaws leading qualifier in 2005, McCarl returned to the tour last season after dominating Knoxville Raceway, where he won six consecutive track titles.
With the Outlaws, McCarl quickly became one of the top time trialers. Seemingly every night, McCarl was at or near the top of the qualifying charts, which eventually led to a series of top-10 finishes and several single-lap records, including one at the Altoona, Iowa-native’s home Knoxville Raceway.
McCarl methodically worked his way into the top 10 in the championship standings, but wasn’t satisfied with that. He continued pushing forward and earned a runner-up finish at K-C Raceway before heading to Williams Grove, where he posted another top 10, a sign of what’s to come from the McCarl-owned Eagle on the Outlaws circuit in 2006.
Through 90 nights of racing with the World of Outlaws in 2005, the McCarl’s team had no engine failures with his Wesmar powerplant, which was quite a feat and helped McCarl earn a series-high 12 quick times, including a single-lap record at intimidating half-mile Knoxville Raceway during Knoxville Nationals competition. But proving he and his crew are able to adapt to any type of track, McCarl also established the single lap record last season on the tiny Lawrenceburg quarter-mile oval, as well. In all, McCarl posted 12 top-fives and 28 top-10s to finish ninth in the championship standings.
McCarl has been racing sprint cars for more than 21 years. In 2004, McCarl won his sixth consecutive Knoxville Raceway 410 track championship in addition to earning his first two World of Outlaws victories with wins in Joplin, Mo., and Tulare, Calif. He totaled 25 victories in during the year.
He’s also added six track titles at Huset’s Speedway to his list of accomplishments.
McCarl has amassed 208 wins in his career, including victories in 15 states and Australia at 41 different tracks. He also wears a promoter’s cap.
In addition, McCarl’s McTwo Promotions presents major events at Oskaloosa’s Southern Iowa Speedway, including the Front Row Challenge and Non-Wing Ultimate Challenge.
The Dirt Track @ Lowe's Motor Speedway is a semi-banked 0.4-mile oval. The track record of 11.880 seconds was established by Jeff Shepard on October 6, 2001.
