Matt Carter made his NASCAR debut in 2003 competing in the Craftsmen Truck Series, racing only the fall race at Martinsville Speedway that season (October 18). Driving the No. 96 Heavytruckdealers.com Dodge, Carter started in 14th position, finishing the Advance Auto Parts 200 in 17th position. He finished the 2003 Truck season 100th in point standings.
For the Nationwide Series, Carter debuted in 2007. He raced only one event (Memphis) starting 31st but finishing 39th when he crashed in the No. 40 Milio's Sandwiches Ford. He finished his Nationwide rookie season 152nd in Series rankings. Carter is set to race the 2008 Nationwide Series driving the No. 40 Specialty Racing Ford for Doug Taylor.
Carter has also competed in the Hooters Pro Cup Series division of United Speed Alliance Racing (USAR).
Carter, driver of the No. 26 Travis Carter Motorsports Ford, picked up his second Awesome Awnings Pole Award (for $1000) of the 2007 season during qualifying for the Aaron’s 250 at USA Int’l Speedway in Lakeland, Florida on Saturday, November 3. Carter set a new track record lapping USA Int’l in 21.409 seconds at 126.115 mph. Carter finished the Aaron's 250 in ninth position.
Carter debuted in the ARCA REMAX Series in 2008 driving the No. 46 Ford for Larry Clement.
