In 2002, Scott Dixon finished 13th in the CART point standings, scoring three top-five finishes, including a second place at Denver.
Dixon made CART history at Nazareth in May 2001 by becoming the youngest winner in CART history at 20 years and nine months. In his rookie season, the New Zealand native recorded six top-five and 10 top-10 finishes. His accomplishments with PacWest earned him the 2001 CART rookie of the year honors.
Dixon won one of the best championship battles in the history of the IndyCar Series. Heading into the final race of the 2003 season, he was tied for the lead with two-time Indianapolis 500 winner Helio Castroneves. Three other driver's were also eligible for the championship, but in the end, Dixon's second-place finish in the final race was good enough to win the historic five-car battle for the points championship.
Since that epic battle, Dixon has had a tough time regaining his winning ways. In the two seasons following his first championship, he won only one time and finished in 10th and 13th place in 2004 and 2005 respectively.
He did, however, regain some stature in the IndyCar Series in 2007 by winning four races and finishing in the top 10 in all but one of the 17 races, including 13 top fives. He contended for the championship, but lost the title by 13 points to Dario Franchitti.
Dixon won his second IndyCar Series championship in 2008, defeating Helio Castroneves, the defending series champ, by 17 points overall. 2008 was by far Dixon's best season to date as he amassed six victories, seven poles and 15 top fives.
In 2009, Dixon will again drive the No. 9 car for Chip Ganassi Racing.
